If you have kids or if you have ever spent time with a child, then you have probably experienced and chuckled when that little human tries to imitate another bigger human. My daughter is almost two years old and it’s hilarious to watch her try to pattern after her older brother as he dances, runs, throws a baseball or practices his three-point football stance. She hasn’t quite figured out that she’s not the real boss yet, but if big brother can do it, she believes she can do it too.
In life, modeling and imitation is an important part of how we grow and develop. As growing and maturing Christians, this devotion serves as a reminder that we have been called to love one another as Christ loved us. (John 15:12). Too often we give love in response to the love we were given. We usually treat others the way they have treated us, and we give out what they have given.
Jesus commands us to do the opposite and to love others in spite of how they may or may not love us. That means we are to love without consequence, to love without judgement, to love without prejudice, and to love without limits. The way we do this is by following the model that Jesus lived out, being quick to do as he did and commands.
Whose pattern are you following? What area of your life do you need to imitate Jesus more?
“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.”
